Viking River Cruises announced planes to construct a new series of four sister ships that will ply European rivers in the 2012 cruise season. These four ships will be known as the "Viking Longships", and will make up an exciting new class of river cruise vessel.

Viking is pouring $250 million into its fleet, paying attention to little details like shifting the stateroom corridor over by one meter and reorienting suites to allow for more passenger space. Two suites will measure 445 square feet, making them the largest river cruise suites in Europe. These Explorer Suites will also feature a wraparound veranda in addition to a separate living room and bedrooms. Seven Veranda Suites will have both French and full-sized balconies as well. At 443 feet in length, these will be some of the longest river cruise vessels afloat, and will feature hybrid-electric engines and extensive solar panels.

Not all cruise vacations are about party boats in the Caribbean. Vacation Cruise lines are increasingly broadening their itineraries to more remote travel destinations and offering more theme cruises. For example, AmaWaterways offers Vietnam Mekong River cruises about the 92 passenger La Marguerite.

In response to surging interest in Asia, the US-based company is now expanding its offerings with the launch of a larger 124 passenger ship, the AmaLotus, this fall. Onboard amenities will include a Vietnamese hot-pot dining room and a spacious sun deck with a fitness room and swimming pool. The ship will make seven-night sailings between Siem Reap, Cambodia and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Vietnam highlights of the cruise include a floating market, the town of Sa Dec, and Xeo Quyt, a canal-laced jungle that once served as a base for the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.
